What Is Propanediol?
Propanediol (also called 1,3-Propanediol) is a lightweight, plant-derived humectant made through the natural fermentation of corn sugars. Think of it as nature’s answer to the synthetic glycols that have dominated conventional skincare for decades — only better, cleaner, and backed by modern science.
You may have heard of propylene glycol, its petroleum-based cousin. Propanediol gives you all the benefits — and none of the drawbacks. It’s 100% plant-based, fully biodegradable, and produced with significantly lower carbon emissions than conventional glycol manufacturing. What Does It Actually Do?
Propanediol is one of those rare ingredients that quietly does the work of several.
It’s a deep hydrator. Propanediol is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment and locks it into your skin. Clinical studies show it maintains improved skin hydration and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) for up to 8 hours after application. That’s all-day moisture from a single, clean ingredient.[1]
It makes your botanicals work harder. One of our favorite things about propanediol is how it performs in relationship with other ingredients. As a natural solvent and penetration enhancer, it helps dissolve and deliver plant-based actives deeper into the skin — so the botanical extracts, oils, and herbal infusions we pour into our formulas don’t just sit on the surface. They absorb.[2]
It plays beautifully with glycerin. Many natural formulas rely on glycerin for moisture — but glycerin alone can leave a sticky, heavy feeling on the skin. Propanediol acts as glycerin’s perfect partner: it amplifies the hydrating effect while eliminating the tacky finish, leaving your skin feeling silky, comfortable, and genuinely nourished.[3]
